Recognize resource dilution
When everything is a priority, teams switch between competing requests and progress slows. PMO Partners portfolio assessments involving more than 1,300 respondents identified insufficient people and changing priorities as leading challenges. Busy teams can still miss the strategic work that matters most.
Make the choice explicit
Use a common framework to compare initiatives against strategy, value, complexity, and uncertainty. A weighted scoring model can improve objectivity, but leaders still need to make the tradeoffs and decline or defer good ideas.
Protect the selected work
Give critical initiatives the resources they require and align incentives and operational goals around them. Review assumptions regularly, challenge optimism, and keep executive sponsorship visible. Prioritization succeeds when it changes how capacity is allocated, rather than simply producing a ranked list.
