Use the method that fits the work

Early drug and medical device research benefits from short learning cycles when the solution is still uncertain. Qualification, validation, and submission work need defined steps, documented evidence, and formal approvals.

A hybrid model can sequence these approaches, moving from iterative discovery into more structured development as decisions stabilize.

Coordinate parallel work deliberately

Complex programs may run Agile and waterfall activities simultaneously. Shared planning intervals, demonstrations, and reviews help teams align on objectives, handoffs, and dependencies. Include project managers and other stakeholders from controlled workstreams in those discussions.

Embed quality, systems engineering, and compliance expertise early so documentation develops alongside the product. Focus on usable incremental outputs that support later milestones. Neither methodology succeeds in isolation when the program depends on both; the integrated operating model is what creates reliable progress.
