Define value before delegating

A managed service provider can reduce administrative effort and introduce price competition. For professional services, however, the right choice also depends on judgment, expertise, fit, and the ability to navigate changing scope. Executive sponsors need a role in evaluating those qualities.

Keep decision rights clear

Specify who selects the provider, approves changes, evaluates performance, and resolves issues. Track outcomes as well as quoted savings, including rework, delay, and the cost of poor service. Outsourcing procurement does not remove the business owner’s accountability.

Understand the payment chain

Service providers should also examine their exposure when an intermediary controls payment. Financial safeguards, performance notices, and remedies for nonpayment require careful review with qualified counsel. Strong governance connects purchasing efficiency with delivery quality and a clear allocation of commercial risk.
