Understand what the resistance reveals

Employee concerns can expose an overlooked business risk. In one planned plant relocation, financial benefits looked compelling until leaders recognized that the move could lose 80% of the organization’s knowledge base. They abandoned the relocation rather than ignore the operational consequences.

Respond deliberately

When change creates clear value, explain the purpose, address concerns, and provide the tools people need to adapt. When objections reveal a flawed premise, revise or reconsider the change. When informed support has been built and individuals continue actively undermining agreed direction, leaders must address that behavior through appropriate management processes.

Waiting for opposition to disappear is also a choice, and it can increase cost and uncertainty. Effective leadership combines listening with accountability: evaluate the feedback honestly, decide what it means, and communicate the path forward.
