Map the real journey
Follow patients from referral and scheduling through care and follow-up. Include the handoffs between departments and external providers that no single team sees in full. Use patient feedback and prospective-patient perspectives to identify the friction that matters most.
Combine efficiency with care
Lean methods can reveal delays and redundant steps. The same assessment should examine communication, empathy, expectations, and culture. Faster processes do not automatically create a reassuring experience, and a difficult first contact can affect how later care is perceived.
Design change with frontline staff
Prioritize improvements by likely impact and operational feasibility. Engage the people who will deliver the experience, establish meaningful measures, and support adoption. Early improvements can build momentum, while sustained change requires coordination among leadership, clinical teams, operational staff, and patients.
