Recognize the cost of neglect
Culture-building takes time, and leaders may favor improvements that yield faster visible results. Yet reorganizations, technology investments, and compensation changes cannot by themselves establish trust. Culture reflects the decisions executives make and the behaviors they tolerate.
Distinguish enduring values from strategic behaviors
Core values establish lasting standards such as honesty, excellence, and care for people. Other characteristics, including a particular approach to innovation or risk, may evolve with strategy. Both need clear leadership attention, but they serve different purposes.
Design the environment deliberately
Assess cultural enablers and obstacles, include relevant work in the strategic portfolio, and measure progress. Align leadership incentives with the environment the organization needs. Consistent structure, genuine care, and credible behavior help people understand how to contribute to the vision.
